19th BJS Exam to Begin in October: Attorney General

The 19th Bangladesh Judicial Service (BJS) examination will begin with the preliminary test in the third week of October. Attorney General Barrister Mohammad Ruhul Quddus Kajal shared this information through verified Facebook page.

In a post on his verified Facebook page on Thursday, September 24, he said the preliminary examination is expected to begin in the third week of October.

The Attorney General also said steps would be taken to appoint more judges through the process.

200 candidates recommended for Civil Judge posts

The Attorney General said the results of the 18th BJS examination were published on Wednesday.

According to his post, 200 candidates have been recommended for appointment as Civil Judges through the examination. He congratulated those recommended for appointment.

He also said the remaining formalities would be completed quickly. He expressed hope that the newly appointed judges would join the judiciary soon.

The Attorney General urged the new judges to perform their duties with honesty, integrity, impartiality and responsibility.

More judges planned for the judiciary

Barrister Mohammad Ruhul Quddus Kajal said Bangladesh has a known shortage of judges.

He said the Bangladesh Judicial Service Commission recommended 200 Civil Judges instead of the requested 100. He also noted that he is an ex-officio member of the commission as the Attorney General.

The Attorney General said strengthening the judiciary and reducing the shortage of judges are important parts of the process. He described his role in the process as both a responsibility and an honour.

19th BJS examination ahead

The 19th BJS examination is the next recruitment process for entry-level judicial service posts.

The Bangladesh Judicial Service Commission had earlier published a recruitment circular for 250 Civil Judge posts under the 19th BJS examination. The circular was issued in July, while applications were accepted from August 6 to September 6, 2026.

The published circular stated that the preliminary examination was expected in October. It also said the commission would announce the detailed examination schedule and centre information through its official notices.

The latest statement from the Attorney General gives a more specific expected timeframe, with the preliminary examination planned for the third week of October.

Focus on reducing judge shortage

The shortage of judges has remained a concern in Bangladesh's lower courts.

In July, Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman told Parliament that 1,964 of 2,620 sanctioned judge posts in the subordinate courts were filled at that time. He also said requisitions had been sent for recruiting judges through the 19th and 20th BJS examinations.

The Attorney General said continued and faster steps by the Bangladesh Judicial Service Commission could help reduce the shortage of judges.

The next major step will be the preliminary examination of the 19th BJS process, which is expected to begin in the third week of October.
