Four New Subjects Coming for Class 4 and 6 Students from 2027

Four new books and subjects are set to be introduced in Bangladesh’s primary and secondary education system from the 2027 academic year. The initiative aims to give students greater exposure to sports, culture, joyful learning and modern technical education.

The new books will be compulsory for students in the relevant classes. However, there will be no separate annual examinations for these subjects. Instead, students will be assessed through continuous assessment during the academic year.

According to the information provided by education officials, Sports and Culture of Bangladesh will be introduced from Class Four. Two other subjects, Learning with Happiness and My Technical Education, will be introduced from Class Six.

Four new subjects from 2027

The new subjects are being introduced with the aim of broadening students’ learning beyond traditional classroom-based education. The initiative also seeks to familiarise students with modern technology and practical learning.

For Class Four students, a sports and physical education-based book titled Sports and Culture will be added. The subject will also include elements related to Bangladesh’s culture.

For Class Six students, Learning with Happiness and My Technical Education will be introduced. These subjects are intended to support joyful learning and provide students with an early understanding of technical education.

The new curriculum plan also places importance on modern technology. Areas such as robotics, artificial intelligence (AI) and the Fourth Industrial Revolution are expected to receive greater attention in the wider curriculum reform process.

No separate annual exam

Students will not have to sit for separate annual examinations for the newly introduced subjects. Their progress will instead be assessed throughout the academic year.

The assessment will consider students’ participation in classroom activities, practical work, different learning activities and overall progress. This approach is intended to reduce dependence on conventional examination-based assessment.

Continuous assessment means that students’ learning will be observed over time rather than being judged only through a final examination. Teachers will therefore have an important role in recording and evaluating students’ progress.

More than 15 million books to be printed

Preparations are already underway to print more than 15 million copies of the new books for students.

The tender process for printing the books is currently underway. Tender invitations, selection of printing institutions and other formal procedures will be completed in stages.

Once the printing institutions are selected and other formalities are completed, the books will move towards the printing stage. The large number of books reflects the need to supply them to students across the relevant classes.

Preparation of new textbooks underway

Work on preparing and editing the new textbooks is also progressing.

Officials are working on different parts of the books, including content suitable for students’ age and grade level. The chapters are being arranged, while necessary pictures, exercises and other learning materials are also being prepared.

The books will be finalised after the content and other required materials are completed. They will then be prepared for printing and distribution.

The preparation process is important because the new subjects are intended for students at different stages of their education. The content therefore needs to match their learning ability and age.

Teacher guides and assessment methods also being prepared

Education officials said that introducing the new subjects will require preparations beyond printing and distributing textbooks.

Teachers will need clear guidance on how to teach the new subjects in classrooms. They will also need instructions on how to assess students under the continuous assessment system.

For this reason, work is also underway to prepare teacher guides, assessment methods and necessary guidelines alongside the textbooks.

These materials are expected to help teachers understand the objectives of the new subjects and the appropriate ways to assess students’ learning progress.

Focus on practical and modern education

The introduction of the four subjects is part of a broader effort to give students exposure to areas that are not fully covered through traditional academic subjects.

Sports and cultural learning can support students’ participation in activities outside conventional academic lessons. Joyful learning is intended to make the learning process more engaging for students.

Technical education, meanwhile, is expected to introduce students to modern technology at an early stage. The broader plan includes areas linked to robotics, artificial intelligence and the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Wider curriculum reform planned for 2028
