NCTB to Print Four New Textbooks

Four new textbooks are set to be introduced for Grade 4 and Grade 6 students from the 2027 academic year in Bangladesh. The new books are Sports and Culture of Bangladesh for Grade 4, and Joyful Learning and My Technical Education for Grade 6.

The Bangla versions of the four books have already been edited. Work on the English versions is now at the final stage.

According to sources at the National Curriculum and Textbook Board, about 7.2 million copies of the two Grade 4 books will be printed. Around 8 million copies of the two Grade 6 books are also planned for the 2027 academic year.

The live tender process for the books is now underway. After the tenders are opened, successful bidders will receive a Notice of Award, or NOA.

Contracts will then be completed with the selected printing presses. The four textbooks will be printed using the book CDs provided for production.

All Four Books to Use 80 GSM Color Paper

The new textbooks will be printed on color paper. This is notable for the Grade 6 books because secondary-level textbooks are generally printed in black and white.

Primary textbooks are usually printed on 80 GSM paper. Secondary textbooks are generally printed on 70 GSM paper. However, all four new textbooks will use 80 GSM paper.

NCTB contracts normally allow 70 days for textbook printing. The sources said less time will be given for printing these four books.

A one-day workshop will also be held before the books are finalized. Experts, teachers and other relevant stakeholders will give their views during the workshop.

Necessary additions and deletions will be made after the discussion. The remaining work is expected to be completed within the current month.

What Students Will Learn from the Grade 4 Books

The Grade 4 Sports textbook will have 13 chapters. It aims to teach students about sports, rules, techniques, physical fitness and mental development.

Its topics include physical exercise, football, cricket, badminton, kabaddi, chess, athletics, swimming and martial arts. It will also cover mental well-being, sports accidents, first aid and new sports activities.

The chapters will focus on basic ideas, rules, techniques and practice. Students will also learn about teamwork, self-confidence and discipline through sports.

The Culture of Bangladesh textbook will contain 10 chapters. It is designed to introduce students to the country's language, traditions, lifestyle and cultural diversity.

Topics will include family and social values, language and literature, festivals, folk culture, art, food, clothing and ornaments. The book will also discuss the cultures of different communities and the link between nature and culture.

The book aims to help students understand their cultural identity. It will also introduce the idea of unity within Bangladesh's cultural diversity.

New Grade 6 Books to Focus on Well-Being and Skills

The Grade 6 Joyful Learning textbook will focus on a positive mindset, healthy living and enjoyable learning.

It will have seven chapters. The topics include exercise, body care, politeness, time with loved ones, enjoying the world, gratitude and ways to be happy.

The book will include practical activities instead of relying only on theory. The aim is to help students build positive daily habits and make learning more enjoyable.

The other new Grade 6 textbook is My Technical Education. It aims to show students the value of technical and vocational education and encourage interest in skills-based learning.

The book follows John Keller's 1983 ARCS-P motivation model. Its core elements are attention, relevance, confidence, satisfaction and purpose.

The book will have five chapters. These will cover skilled people, technical skills in daily life, safe skill learning, technical skills for society and the nation, and future planning through technical education.

Students are expected to learn how skills-based education connects with real life. The book will also introduce career opportunities and preparation for future working life.

The four books will be finalized after the remaining English editing and the planned workshop are completed.
