Worried About WhatsApp Chat Security? Turn On These 3 Settings

WhatsApp users can add more protection to private chats by enabling three security features. These are Chat Lock, Two-Step Verification and End-to-End Encrypted Backup.

Chat Lock protects selected private chats

Chat Lock helps protect selected private chats if someone gets access to a phone. A locked chat moves from the normal chat list to a separate folder.

Opening the chat requires a fingerprint, Face ID or passcode. This can help keep private conversations away from other people using the phone.

To turn on Chat Lock, open the chat and go to the profile or Chat Info section. Then select Chat Lock and follow the instructions.

WhatsApp also has a Secret Code option for locked chats. It can hide the locked-chat folder from the normal chat list.

The hidden chats can later be found by searching with the chosen code.

Two-Step Verification adds account protection

Two-Step Verification adds another layer of account security. When it is enabled, signing into the account on a new device needs a security PIN.

The SMS verification code is also required. Users can enable the feature through Settings > Account > Two-step verification.

Users can set a six-digit PIN and add an email address. The email can help recover the PIN if it is forgotten.

Users should never share their WhatsApp registration code or security PIN. Keeping these details private helps protect the account.

Encrypt your WhatsApp chat backup

Chat backups also need protection because they can contain private chats and other personal information. WhatsApp provides End-to-End Encrypted Backup for this purpose.

Users can turn it on through Settings > Chats > Chat Backup > End-to-End Encrypted Backup. The backup can be secured with a passkey, password or 64-digit encryption key.

This provides additional protection for chat backups stored through supported cloud services. Users should keep their chosen security method safe.

Other steps can also improve security

Users should also keep WhatsApp updated. A strong phone screen lock or biometric security can provide added protection.

Users should avoid unfamiliar messages and suspicious links. They should also be careful when receiving requests for security codes or other account information.
