Monash University Plans to Establish Branch Campus in Bangladesh: Education Minister

Australian university Monash University plans to establish a branch campus in Bangladesh, Education Minister A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon said on Thursday, September 24.

The minister made the statement during the Third Dhaka-China Day 2026 celebration at East West University in Dhaka. He said the government would work to implement the initiative.

“Recently, Monash University expressed its intention to establish a campus in our country, and we will implement it,” Milon said.

He also highlighted recent steps to strengthen Bangladesh’s higher education sector. According to the minister, the country now has 116 private universities and a strong Bangladesh Accreditation Council for university accreditation.

Milon said Bangladesh had also recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Malaysian Qualifications Agency. He said the government was looking at further ways to improve the education sector.

The minister said the government would work to create a better environment for both public and private universities. He described education as a key factor in the country’s national development.

Education Minister praises East West University

At the event, Milon also praised East West University for its contribution to Bangladesh’s education sector.

He said the university had made significant contributions to supporting poor and meritorious students. According to him, one in every five students at the university receives a scholarship.

Milon also praised the university’s teachers and students. He said its faculty members are skilled and talented and that its students are performing well.

The proposed Monash University campus would add another international university presence to Bangladesh’s higher education sector. The government’s next steps will focus on implementing the initiative, according to the education minister.
