Educational Institutions Closed Today for Fateha-i-Yazdaham

All educational institutions across Bangladesh are closed today, Wednesday, September 23, for Fateha-i-Yazdaham. The holiday applies to teachers, students, and staff at schools, colleges, madrasas, and technical educational institutions.

However, September 23 is not a general public holiday for government and private offices. Government, semi-government and autonomous institutions will continue their normal activities today.

Banks, insurance companies, corporate offices and other private organisations will also remain open. Their employees will not receive an automatic holiday for Fateha-i-Yazdaham.

Why are educational institutions closed today?

The holiday date was changed from September 24 to September 23. The Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education announced the change in a notification on September 20.

According to the notification, the ministry partly amended an earlier notice issued on May 20. The change followed a decision by the Islamic Foundation regarding the observance of Fateha-i-Yazdaham.

The academic calendars of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education now list September 23 as the holiday for educational institutions.

As a result, academic activities at educational institutions across the country remain suspended today.

Some Institutions are open today

Government, semi-government and autonomous offices are operating as usual on September 23. Employees may take the day as an optional holiday if they receive approval from the relevant authority.

Private and commercial organisations are also following their normal working schedules. This includes banks, insurance companies and corporate offices.

Therefore, the holiday today mainly applies to educational institutions. It does not mean that all government and private employees have a day off.

What is Fateha-i-Yazdaham?

Fateha-i-Yazdaham is a religious observance associated with the death anniversary of Hazrat Abdul Qadir Gilani (R.). He was a prominent Islamic preacher and is also known as Ghaus-ul-Azam or Boro Pir.

The word “Yazdaham” means eleven, while “Fateha” refers to offering a prayer. According to Islamic history, Hazrat Abdul Qadir Gilani (R.) died on 11 Rabi al-Thani in the Hijri year 561.

Muslims in different countries observe Fateha-i-Yazdaham through religious prayers and other observances.

Educational institutions will remain closed today according to the revised academic holiday schedule. Government offices, banks, insurance companies and private organisations will continue their regular activities unless their authorities approve an optional holiday.
